Mobile Startup - Mobile Blog Page

Well I decided since mobile is what I do, I should probably have a mobile web version of this blog. I have been doing a lot of visual comparison between browsers the last couple of days and am going to spend some more time this weekend doing some research comparing the different device browsers visually. Brian Fling and I have been discussing the state of the mobile web a lot lately in anticipation of a panel he is moderating at SXSW Interactive next week on "De-mystifying the Mobile Web".

So if you are interested in seeing version 1 of this page on your phone, check out http://wap.mobilestartup.com.

Note: I'm not wild about using "wap" as the hostname, but what are my alternatives? Automatic device detection, which I'm working, on sure. .mobi domain? No thanks on that one.

use http://m.mobilestartup.com. or better, get a shorter domain.

The issue of wap hostnames for me really isn't about length. It used to be, but now I think it's not that big a deal to type in a domain. The mobile savvy can handle tri-tapping in a domain, and a lot of phones have qwerty keyboards. Also if you use a service like Yahoo's you can send yourself the email in an sms. The issue for me is one of standardization. Although it is very common for organizations to alias their domain to their webhost, it is still a defacto standard to use www as the hostname or alias for a web site. So for those of us who have not implemented browser detection, what should we consider the standard , if there is one, for mobile sites?

Personally, I think that device/browser is the way it is going to have to go. In the not too distant future, we are going to be accessing web sites from all sorts of different devices, not just PCs and mobile phones. So www will remain the defacto hostname for websites. That is going to have to require browser detection on the server side and dynamic layout of sites. Meanwhile I guess I'm sticking with "wap".
